A Message from the Regional Chairman – 1 Year On

Just over 12 months ago I was honoured to be named Chairman of the West Midlands Region. Whilst a week is a long time in politics, I could never have imagined my first year as chairman would be quite so eventful! We have seen 3 Prime Ministers, the death of our beloved Queen, the coronation of our new King, readoptions of MPs across the region, local elections and the most successful Regional fundraiser of all time.

Being in Government for over a decade means that it was almost certain we would struggle against the calls for change. COVID, Economic hardships and the issues arising the Channel mean that this Government is facing the toughest challenges we have had in most people’s memory. The local elections were hard, many hard working councillors and candidates did not get the results they deserved. As your regional chairman I would like to thank every volunteer, candidate and party staff member for everything you do, not just during elections but all year round.

Whilst the challenges are real, I also want to celebrate the successes. Herefordshire and Sandwell both saw fantastic results that went against the national picture. This is a testament to all of your hard work as well as the leadership shown by the Area teams. It was amazing for me personally to meet so many enthusiastic people out on the campaign trail, and I look forwards to meeting many more of you over the coming months. 

The Monday night connect calling group is going strong with a core group of volunteers leading the charge, this has also become a great place for those who are a little nervous to get training and support from our experienced campaigners. In November, we were privileged to be joined by Sir Graham Brady for our first regional function post COVID. The room was a complete sell out and we raised over £80,000 on the night in profit, these funds will be vital in the coming months as we look to both general elections and the forthcoming Mayoral Elections. We’re hoping to hold another big event later in the year and I look forward to welcoming as many of you there as possible.
